We all have birthmarks. A dot here, a discolored patch there. Some stand out, others barely noticeable. They’re odd little patches of melanin, or lack thereof, that remind us we’re unique, yet connected.
These birthmarks don’t tend to change much through life. I have several and so does my wife. Hers is quite unique and hasn’t changed a bit over the years.
My daughter has one too. A small dot on her left leg. When she was first born, I thought I’d missed a spot during a diaper change! But no, it was hers before she ever saw the sun.
Now, months later, she’s changing so fast I can hardly keep up. Her face is more expressive. Her eyes more curious. Sometimes I don’t recognize the baby I’m holding as the same one we brought home.
But then I see that little mark.
And I’m reminded, she hasn’t changed entirely. That birthmark is the anchor. A quiet assurance from God that no matter how fast she grows, she’s still my little girl.
So don’t worry if your little one seems like a totally different person today than they were last month. They are, that’s the point! They need to grow and change into the man or woman that God meant for them to be.
Just look for the mark and you’ll know they’re still yours… for now anyway.
